When Phyllis Court – a historic private members’ club in Henley – appointed us to design a new fitness centre, we knew that consultation was going to be a key part of the process. Members expect the very best facilities, and the club’s prestigious history dates back to 1906. This weight of expectation made it essential to cover all bases and explore all development options from the earliest opportunity.
We approached the scheme from the members’ perspective: which facilities were most important to them? How would these be used? What sort of environment did they want to see in their new fitness centre? The Club wanted a centre which could help attract new members in the 45–65 age range, and to start with a small scheme which could be expanded in future.
Key elements to the project such as the swimming pool benefited from a fully integrated approach, and we worked together to make sure that not only did the fitness centre look and feel fantastic to those using it, but that individual details were of exceptional quality. Health and wellbeing was an important part of this, and we made sure to introduce natural ventilation and daylight wherever possible.
The new fitness centre gives members of Phyllis Court a range of thoughtfully designed, skilfully executed spaces – from a swimming pool to a fitness studio, and a fully equipped gym. By taking on board extensive feedback from those who would be using the facilities, we made sure that the final centre was an inviting prospect for potential members. Thanks to the growing demand, there is now a waiting list to join the club.
