To meet the demands of a growing population, a global climate crisis and widespread mental health issues among younger people, the way we design schools needs to take a great leap forward. Our Corde team is thrilled to be working on this new 6FE secondary school for Buckinghamshire County Council, using a higher standard of design to demonstrate that exceptional schools are possible even when budgets are tight.
The design for Kingsbrook Secondary School has followed an enhanced DfE Output Specification. This means that our team had to work to strict budget constraints – while meeting forward-thinking aspirations for a next-generation school.
Kingsbrook Secondary School is planned as an exemplar for sustainable design, and our team has carried out a programme of workshops specifically to achieve this. We’ve considered every aspect of the School’s design and use, with the ideas we’ve adopted including Display Energy Certificates for more accurate metering, use of an online directory of low-carbon materials, and a three-year programme of sustainability aftercare with the School.
When complete, the School will represent a step change in secondary school design – and a welcoming, nurturing place to study and work. With over 1000 places for students up to 18 and facilities which can be shared by the wider community, it will hopefully inspire future schools in its radical, creative solutions to the climate crisis, and future students in its transformative approach to education.
